Our EHS Team is a vital group dedicated to ensuring all Pacific Seafood locations remain in compliance with federal, state, and company regulations. We consistently do our best and always strive to be better so that we can mitigate risks and create a safe working environment for all team members. As the selected intern, you will help craft the training program that will ensure a safe and healthy work environment for all team members.

Project goals and outcome:
The wastewater pollutants and best management practices (BMPs) intern will focus on identifying pollution prevention BMPs to reduce waste in seafood processing wastewater.
The intern will collaborate with Pacific Seafood team members to understand current practices, regulations, and emerging technologies related to pollution reduction measures in seafood processing to improve water quality. Additionally, the intern will assess the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of implementing various BMPs, propose recommendations for improvements, and contribute to the development of educational materials and guidance documents to promote sustainable practices for the fishing industry along the Oregon Coast.

The intern will need to identify what are the current best management practices being used in the seafood industry to minimize pollution emanating from fish scraps and residuals in wastewater and conduct a comprehensive literature review and perform any applicable data analysis to rank the effectiveness for mitigating pollution.

They will want to reduce the overall amount of pollution entering the natural environment and investigate ways to change behavior at seafood processing facilities.

OASE project details:

  • Collate research to identify the most effective pollution prevention practices
  • Coordinate with local processing locations to determine the types of practices currently being implemented
  • Identify areas within the process stream that produce the highest amounts of waste, then generate or identify solutions to reduce pollutants from entering natural environments
  • Conduct a literature review of industry BMPs
  • Assess effectiveness of BMPs for pollution prevention

The intern will work with the Environmental Health & Safety Department. The Supervisor has a background in environmental science and sustainability and the team has a strong technical background in environmental compliance and sustainability. The intern will also work with both engineering and processing divisions who oversee BMP implementation and waste reduction measures at processing facilities.

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way.
